Key Features
- Bark sloughing off tree
- Peeling bark
- Species dependent sloughing patterns
Symptoms
Bark may peel or fall off the tree in sheets, depending upon tree species, in blocks, plates or shreddings. Sloughing or peeling of the bark is a normal process for some tree species. Bark sloughing often begins as trees grow in the spring: The outer layers of bark are dead tissue. When the tree begins to grow in diameter, the outer bark may split or slough.
Biology
The inner bark is living, and forms a new protective coat as the outer bark pulls apart. If you look closely at normally furrowed bark, you will not be able to see the wood below.
Management Recommendations
This is normal for certain species of trees. No control is necessary.
Effective Pesticides
Pesticides are neither available nor recommended for managing this condition.
