Weird Growths

Key Features

  • Unexpected plant growth
  • Weird growths
Adventitious buds on a willow stem
Excessive bud formation likely due to sublethal herbicide application
Adventitious buds can form on roots, too!

Symptoms

Plant growth doesn't always occur as expected. Adventitious buds are buds that develop in places they aren't supposed to, like the tip of a stem, or on a shoot. Adventitious buds and shoots can develop on stems, roots, leaves. Sometimes 'weird' growth is simply something that wasn't previously observed but is normal for that plant.

Biology

Plant growth and development are signaled by plant hormones as a response to age, hardiness, dormancy, along with the environment. Environmental impacts that affect plant growth include drought, temperature, flooding, and even sublethal herbicides in the form of drift or weed-and-feed products.

Management Recommendations

There isn't much that can be done about the weather, but minimizing the contact between shrubs and herbicides will protect them from these insults.

Effective Pesticides

Pesticides are neither available nor recommended for managing this condition.
